There is now a Facebook group, St Mary’s Church, Nettleton and Burton, for anyone who has been to the church and/or wants to keep in touch. Were you baptised here ? Were you married here? Is one of your nearest and dearest buried in our churchyard ? Have you been to a service here at any time ? None of the above? All are welcome to become members, and upload your pictures and let us have your news, comments and views.
Burton is a small village in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is about 8 miles west of Chippenham and lies in the Electoral Parish of Nettleton. There is a record of Burton dating back to AD 1204, and more recently, Book 44 Wiltshire of the topographical collections of John Aubrey 1659-70.
The most important building in the village of Burton is the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is Grade 1 listed. Other old buildings include Chestnut Cottage, which used to be the old forge, and The Old Plume, which used to be the Plume of Feathers public house. Part of the Old Rectory, now a private house, dates from 1605, although in common with these other old buildings, it has been substantially extended and altered over the generations.
There is an ancient causeway along the top of Church Hill. Click here to download the Cotswold Archaeology Report: 2012 Land off Nettleton Road Burton Report 05161.pdf.

PANCAKE SUPPER RAISES OVER £600
Our yearly visit to The Old House at Home, for our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Evening, was as brilliant as ever. Pat and Mike were as courteous as always entering into the spirit of the evening. Thank you and all the staff who prepared and served such delicious pancakes for nearly 50 of Nettleton and Burton’s residents, plus those from nearby villages and one couple from as far as Swindon! Thank you to Katy for the ‘guess the celebrity’ picture quiz! As always a brain teaser as you can see people racking their brains to remember faces and I was even aware of a bit of bartering going on….I’ll swap number 19 for number 23… Well done the Liz’s ladies who won this for the second year running. Donations of goodies meant the tombola was brimming with lots or wonderful prizes for all to win. Thank you to all who donated and to Annie and Richard for selling tickets at tables.
Last and not least the raffle, which had some fantastic treasures to win, a trailer of manure being hotly competed for a Sunday lunch for two, kindly donated by Mark Warburton) champagne, wine, chocolates and last, but not least, teddy.
Dave Warburton auctioned a £40 dinner for two (thank you) which was won by Sarah Jane, well done and enjoy.
Tired but exuberant residents started to drift home “we look forward to next year”, ‘reserve us tickets”. This we will.
Thank you to all who helped and provided gifts. We raised the grand total of £605.00 for St Mary’s
Thank you for all who came and made this such a stupendous event.
