Burton is a small village in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is about 8 miles west of Chippenham and lies in the Electoral Parish of Nettleton. There is a record of Burton dating back to AD 1204, and more recently, Book 44 Wiltshire of the topographical collections of John Aubrey 1659-70.
The most important building in the village of Burton is the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is Grade 1 listed. Other old buildings include Chestnut Cottage, which used to be the old forge, and The Old Plume, which used to be the Plume of Feathers public house. Part of the Old Rectory, now a private house, dates from 1605, although in common with these other old buildings, it has been substantially extended and altered over the generations.
There is an ancient causeway along the top of Church Hill. Click here to download the Cotswold Archaeology Report: 2012 Land off Nettleton Road Burton Report 05161.pdf.

VILLAGE FETE AT ST MARY’S
The sun shone and the bells rang out, bringing the crowds to St Mary’s, raising over £850 for St Mary’s. A good time was had by all with a wide variety of activities for children of all ages, and fantastic bargains were to be had on the bric-a-brac stall, the plant stall, and the sale of home made cakes.
Once again, Teddy Bear parachuting was the high spot of the afternoon, and we were proud to have a parachuting Teddy home on leave from Afghanistan.
For a calmer moment, there was the chance to sit down and enjoy a cup tea and a piece of cake, to the background of a recital of organ music, and to walk around the church and enjoy the wonderful flower arrangements and the display of arts, crafts, and photographs.
Many thanks to all those who provided items for display, for sale or for raffle prizes, including local businesses such as Nettleton Post Office, West Kington Nurseries, and House of Flavours.
Particular thanks to all those who helped with preparing and running the stalls and activities, and to all those who came along and contributed generously to both the happy atmosphere and Church funds. All of us went home tired but happy after a successful and enjoyable afternoon, many wearing a shiny new badge declaring ‘I ♥ Burton’. (Badges are still on sale at 30p in the Church)
NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEEETING
9th September 7.30pm at West Kington Baptist Chapel
(provisional)
ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2009 FROM WILTSHIRE COUNCIL
PROPOSED PARKING AREA
There has been a survey and preliminary assessment of the suitability of the land by Nettleton Road as a possible parking area for the Church, also as additional parking spaces for visitors to The Meads and Church Hill. This land was the site of a village hall many years ago.
Click here to download a diagram of the assessment which shows that there is plenty of room for 8 parking spaces to the modern standard of 5m x 2.4m each with a 6m wide aisle, and still leaving over 2m at the narrowest point to the edge of Nettleton Road, plenty of room for the bank which is only 1m wide at that point. There is plenty of room for a 4m wide exit to Nettleton Road, and sight lines are good - much better than the existing sight lines for the exit from at the top of Church Hill.
It is proposed that Westlea Housing are approached for permission to create an access way through the existing dry stone wall around the grassy area by The Meads. Clearly it is still a significant walk to the Church, and if land with suitable access were made available nearer the Church, this would be preferred.
This proposal is to be discussed at the next Parish Council Meeting on 9th September.
