Burton is a small village in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is about 8 miles west of Chippenham and lies in the Electoral Parish of Nettleton. There is a record of Burton dating back to AD 1204, and more recently, Book 44 Wiltshire of the topographical collections of John Aubrey 1659-70.
The most important building in the village of Burton is the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is Grade 1 listed. Other old buildings include Chestnut Cottage, which used to be the old forge, and The Old Plume, which used to be the Plume of Feathers public house. Part of the Old Rectory, now a private house, dates from 1605, although in common with these other old buildings, it has been substantially extended and altered over the generations.
There is an ancient causeway along the top of Church Hill. Click here to download the Cotswold Archaeology Report: 2012 Land off Nettleton Road Burton Report 05161.pdf.

VILLAGE LIBRARY
The village library is open on a self service basis whenever the church is open. In addition to the books in the bookcase, there are some to be found in the box pews. Please make a donation (20p suggested) in the donations box by the main door.
PROPOSED PARKING AREA
There has been a survey and preliminary assessment of the suitability of the land by Nettleton Road as a possible parking area for the Church, also as additional parking spaces for visitors to The Meads and Church Hill. This land was the site of a village hall many years ago.
Click here to download a diagram of the assessment which shows that there is plenty of room for 8 parking spaces to the modern standard of 5m x 2.4m each with a 6m wide aisle, and still leaving over 2m at the narrowest point to the edge of Nettleton Road, plenty of room for the bank which is only 1m wide at that point. There is plenty of room for a 4m wide exit to Nettleton Road, and sight lines are good - much better than the existing sight lines for the exit from at the top of Church Hill.
It is proposed that Westlea Housing are approached for permission to create an access way through the existing dry stone wall around the grassy area by The Meads. Clearly it is still a significant walk to the Church, and if land with suitable access were made available nearer the Church, this would be preferred.
VILLAGE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
MAINS GAS IN BURTON:
Have you had to pay an exorbitant price ? Why not sign up for a quote to get mains gas to Burton ?
So far 15 households have expressed an interest in getting a quotation for the costs of bringing mains gas into Burton. Wales & West Utilities will give us a budget indication of the costs if we can demonstrate interest from 28% of properties. So we are over half way there.
Based on oil at 40p/litre + VAT, you can expect to save about 24% if you are an average user (2000 litres/year), i.e. £200/year. If you are a heavy user (4000 litres/year), you can expect to save 30%, i.e. £500/year.
Compared with LPG you can expect to save about 40%. (All figures using the best current British Gas domestic tariff).
If you would like to express an interest, particularly bearing in mind that there is no commitment at all at this stage, email acaie@burtonwilts.org.uk or ring 01454 218072. For those whose boiler may be nearing the end of its life, it might be a good time to explore the possibility of switching. For those with LPG a simple change of burners at relatively low cost is often possible.
THE CHURCH HILL CAUSEWAY
The County Archaeologist has registered a formal objection to the planning application 10/00693/FUL for the development of 7 houses off Nettleton Road on the grounds that it will lead to the demolition of the ancient Causeway on Church Hill, and that removing the stones and placing them elsewhere is not a sound solution nor adequate mitigation. THE PARISH PLAN IS NOW COMPLETE Click here to download a copy

NETTLETON PARISH COUNCIL - DATES OF MEETINGS
At the last meeting of Nettleton Parish Council it was agreed that it was now appropriate to regularise meetings to monthly and to publish them in advance. Meetings will be at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of every month at West Kington Baptist Chapel. As Nettleton is a small parish it may not always be necessary to hold a meeting likewise sometime it may be appropriate to change to a larger venue.
VILLAGE CHRISTMAS SUPPER
The Old House at Home looked invitingly festive for our Christmas supper with the Christmas tree in a corner, decorations round the pub and tables laid with Christmas crackers.
Tony, the chef, had a glorious spread of turkey, ham and a selection of mouth watering salads and cheese and biscuits. Sally and Dave Warburton, Mike & Pat once again have done us proud. Thanks to Elizabeth who with her warm and welcoming smile made all feel comfortable and relaxed.
The raffle tickets sold well with some fantastic treasures to win: champagne, wine, chocolates and a teddy. Donations of goodies meant the tombola was brimming with lots of wonderful prizes for all to win
The silent auction was, well silent, but all bids were taken; the home made Christmas cake, champagne, horse manure (not sure how Annie will fit it in your Christmas stocking Derek!) gardening and cleaning. The Christmas hamper was auctioned separately as was the Jeroboam of Champagne. This was kindly donated by Mr Joe Morris and the proceeds (£ 110) went to 'Make a Wish Foundation'.
Thank you to the staff at The Old House at Home and all who helped make this an evening to remember. Thank you to all who provided gifts. We raised the grand total of £770.00 for St Mary’s Church.
We hope you all enjoyed Christmas and have a very good New Year.
