St Mary’s Church

The oldest parts of St Mary's Church, which lies on the hill above the hamlet of Burton, date from about 1290 although little remains from that period. The Register of Incumbents dates back to 1305 when the Abbot of Glastonbury presented Johannes de Montacute to the living. The Manor and Advowson of Netlington belonged, until the Dissolution, to Glastonbury Abbey. The present patron is the Bishop of Bristol.

St Mary’s Church is now part of the Bybrook Benefice, which includes the churches at Biddestone, Castle Combe, Colerne, Grittleton, Littleton Drew, North Wraxall, Slaughterford, West Kington and Yatton Keynell.

At St Mary’s we have a variety of services, and all are welcome at every service. There are refreshment and biscuits after our Sunday services, and our TGI Friday service is a stimulating informal service with a different theme each month and with drinks and nibbles to follow. Around the Benefice you can attend a wide range of services, including Taize and BCP services.

The church is normally open during the daytime. Our new community area in the West end of the church is now open, so if you would like to use it for a community activity or event, or simply to post something on the community notice-board in the church, please contact the Churchwarden (see contacts above)

There is now a Facebook group for anyone who has been to the church and/or wants to keep in touch. Were you baptised here ? Were you married here? Is one of your nearest and dearest buried in our churchyard ? Have you been to a service here at any time ? None of the above? All are welcome to become members.
